The original project was shut down by its creator, which left a large audience on a Minecraft version that keeps getting older. Rather than disappearing, the mod spawned a small ecosystem of ports, successors and add-on packs. Each takes a different approach, and the right choice depends on whether you want the original experience or a rebuilt one.
Why the original stopped

A fan project with no obligation to continue
The mod was built by a small team of How to Train Your Dragon fans. Fan projects end, and this one ended at 1.18.2 with the files left available for download rather than pulled entirely.
What "discontinued" means in practice
No bug fixes, no new Minecraft versions, no compatibility patches. The build you download today is the build that will exist indefinitely.
Why community work was permitted
Later teams have described working with the blessing of the original creators, which is why the continuations are public projects rather than private forks.
Direct ports
These aim to be the same mod on a newer Minecraft version.
Dragons of Berk
The most substantial port. It carries the same twelve species forward to 1.20 and later while rewriting most of the underlying code, cleaning up the sound assets and adding quality-of-life features the original never had.
What the port changes
Two additions stand out. A Book of Dragons item gives you in-game documentation of every species, food preference and taming method, which removes the need to keep a wiki open. A dragon staff replaces the stick as the command tool and adds the ability to warp a dragon to you.
Harder Night Fury taming
The port deliberately made the Night Fury a stricter end-game target rather than something reachable with a single potion, which changes the pacing of a full playthrough.
Who it suits
Anyone who wants the original species roster on a current Minecraft version with fewer rough edges. It is the default recommendation for a new player.
Successor modpacks
These bundle a dragon mod with terrain, dungeons and gear to build a complete themed experience.
Claws of Berk
A large modpack built around the same universe, with dungeons, custom world generation, Viking weapons and armour, and archipelago-style terrain designed to echo the films. It has been downloaded well over a million times.
What a modpack adds
Structure. The original mod gives you dragons in an otherwise vanilla world; a pack gives you somewhere to fly them, things to fight and progression beyond taming.
What a modpack costs you
Performance and control. Packs are heavier, and you are accepting someone else's balance decisions across dozens of mods rather than choosing your own.
Who it suits
Players who want a curated playthrough rather than a sandbox, and who have hardware comfortable with a large pack.
Add-on and expansion packs
These extend an existing install rather than replacing it.
Archipelago Additions
An add-on that expands the dragon roster beyond the base twelve, pulling in more species from the wider How to Train Your Dragon universe. It sits on top of the mod rather than standing alone.
Retired resource packs
Earlier community packs added dragons through resource and data pack layers. Several have since been retired and folded into the newer add-ons, so check the date on anything you find before installing it.
Compatibility caution
Add-ons are written against a specific base version. Mixing an add-on built for the original mod with a newer port is the fastest way to produce a crash that looks unexplainable.
Choosing between them
A short decision path covers most players.
If you want the authentic original
Install the 1.18.2 build with GeckoLib and accept the version lock. It still works exactly as it did.
If you want a current Minecraft version
Take the maintained port. You keep the species roster and gain active fixes.
If you want a full adventure
Take a modpack. It is the closest thing to a complete themed campaign.
If you already have a favourite
Add an expansion pack rather than switching. More dragons on a setup you already know beats starting over.
Whichever route you choose, download from the official project pages rather than aggregator sites. Mod files are a heavily impersonated download category, and the official listings are the only ones the authors control.
